I am afraid to say the ring is a fraud. Believe me, I live in Paris, cycle into work every day, and see teh same act happening a few times a week! It even happened to me! The person you met is part of a “ring” of their own, from some east European country, they bend down, pretend they found a ring, hope you think it looks expensive, etc. They usually walk away a few steps then double back to ask for money, makes them look more innocent. Their act pulls on unsuspecting generous heartstrings and ignorance about rings. Very charming, except that bit about asking for more! Keep the ring, you’ll laugh about it later. I found your blog because glad you noticed the machine guns. I live near the Louvres and go through it all the time. I find the machine guns are an affront, Parisians are also abhored, but how to stop them? As for your friend’s observations, well, first, people do not smoke in public indoors anymore, and dog walkers generally do carry plastic bags (though there is abuse, the streets are less pooped than they used to be). Also, not sure Paris and Halifax is a good comparison, with respect. Compare Halifax with…hmm…Orléans. Anyway, thanks for the read and come again. Rory de Paris

Thank you! I seem to be able to feel rather seul here sometimes, even within the amazing set, sounds, and smell. So knowing someone is reading is very cheering. Here’s a salut of un pichet du vin rouge a tu.

love your style, the snooty lion, the champagne for no reason, but what the heck…feels like hanging in Paris with a friend,
Cheers,

I was thinking about you! Just came back from the Louvre and have been reading the Go To book. I definitely have decided to just do one step at a time. I got a ticket for the Bato(bus) for two days and plan just to sail around the Seine and visit the Ile de Cite and Ile de Louis. See how it goes.

Wow Carol – it’s a good thing you’re staying for a whole month. You should take the time you need to just rest and get well. Don’t worry – you’ll be able to handle the Metro like a pro soon, I’m sure. It will be easier without all the luggage and blurry vision!

You lucky duck!

Paris is my favorite city. I say that after having grown up in New York and lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for nearly twenty years. It’s elegant and artful but not uptight. I’m crazy about it. Paris would be a wonderful place to be reborn.

Cheers,

Howard

I studied at the Alliance in Paris long years ago. I loved it. I’ll enjoy reading your blog. I was tempted by that apartment for July, too! Have a wonderful time.
